Idy Recipes c.1950: Eleanor's Coffee Cake
We're begining a series of posts here from a community cookbook compiled in 1950 by The Woman's Guild of The Idyllwild Community Church. With illustrations by Ernie Maxwell. The cookbook contains a myriad of recipes suggested by the locals of the time for rustic mountain living. The collection proclaimed itself "Idyllwild Hillbilly Recipes".
We've composited the first recipe along with the book cover.
Now that a park has returned to the center of Idyllwild, it seemed proper to start with a recipe from Eleanor Johnson, wife of Jerry and mother to Jimmy, who originally suggested a use for the space inside the car turn at the center of town in the 1950's. The park would later be dedicated as Eleanor Park in the seventies.
For the cold weather to come, here is Eleonor's recipe for Coffee Cake. Note the use of Currents, along with "a little" Vanilla, Almond and Orange.
