"So Big" Pondersoa felled.
Local lore names the Ponderosa "So Big", for the last 30 or 4o years, as the most exlaimed phrase about the tree. Possibly more than 500 years old, the tree survived a clear cutting phase in Idyllwild's history that saw the disapearance of most of the giant old growth trees like it. In the last year however, it was discovered to be browning at the top. Within 4 months it was two thirds covered and dying. Over the rest of 2016, the giant finally gave in to a bark beetle infestation. Tree cutters at the scene reported that the tree had a large hole down its center and full of bugs. The tree's giant size now made it a liability for many homes and utility wires in the area.
As the crew of the Tree Service cut up the sections of the great tree and lowered them with a crane, one of the giant pieces they brought down had something special...
